The name comes from the Hardanger fjord in Norway. The origins of Hardanger though go back to Asia and Persia. This was worked on gauze with coloured silk. Modern Hardanger is usually worked with white thread on white linen. Hardanger must be worked on even weave fabric, and has relatively few stitches. The main one is the Kloster Block. This is used to surround areas to be cut. Needleweaving is used on the threads that are left. . I took my charts from ‘Teach Yourself Hardanger Embroidery’ by Adelaide Stockdale. The first cushion is backed with pink fabric, which shows through the hardanger design. The frill is Torchon Bobbin Lace that I made.
