Introduction
Honiton lace comes from Devon. It is much finer than other laces, and is made with bobbins that are tapered at the end, and have no spangles (beads attached for weight). The thread is very fine cotton. The pillow used, is like a ball and the lace is made on the top with the bobbins falling around it. The pieces are small and a lot of cloth stitch (the whiter area in the picture on the right) is used and intricate patterns are woven with the bobbins. The mouse is worked in a more open stitch. When large pieces are worked, as in wedding veils of royalty, lots of pieces are worked and stitched together later.
