My mother was always a good knitter and taught me when I was about 5 years of age. She's over 90 years of age now, still knits with beautiful tension and has just completed this cardigan for her great grandaughter.

I started knitting dolls clothes and by the time I went to secondary school, at the age of 11, I was knitting more ambitious clothing. I remember knitting a lilac mohair ribbed dress, which was very fashionable at the time.

I used to knit all the children’s jumpers and became popular with other mothers at the school for the machine knitted ones that I would make for them.

A machine knitted jumper would only take between 1 to 2 hours to make, depending on the design. At this time I would be commissioned to knit mostly children’s jumpers and cardigans for a local shop. In those days it was much cheaper to hand knit your own garments than to buy them ready made.

There are photos here of some of the things that I still have. The latest is probably the snowman, which is also knitted in mohair.

I don’t do so much knitting nowadays. I’ve discovered other crafts, which I enjoy more.
